Lavender Jazz to perform March 19 at Goshen College

GOSHEN, Ind. -- Lavender Jazz, Goshen College's "big band," returns to the Sauder Concert Hall stage for an engaging March 19 concert in the Music Center at 8 p.m.

With director, Sonny Carreno, Lavender Jazz will explore -- through lively music -- the question, "What Planet is This?" The band will perform the Buddy Rich arrangement of The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood," Count Basie's "Jumping At the Woodside" and Errol Garner's "Misty," among others.

The group's classy presentation and energetic music -- not to mention those purple ties -- became an instant crowd-pleaser last fall. Carreno said, "Since our auspicious debut last fall, we're bigger, stronger and more cohesive. We've expanded our repertoire, polished our sound and put together a can't-miss event!"

Carreno, who began directing Lavender Jazz this year, earned a bachelor's degree from Texas State University-San Marcos. He taught band for five years in the Victoria (Texas) Independent School District. Carreno has taught English as a New Language (ENL) for the past 11 years and currently chairs the ENL Department at Goshen Middle School. For over 25 years, Carreno has drummed professionally in a wide variety of styles and venues, including Latin, rock/pop, R&B, country and western and world beat.

Admission to the concert is $5 general admission, $3 seniors and students, Goshen College students are free. Tickets are available at the door or by calling the Welcome Center at (574) 535-7566.
