Spanish professor leads Goshen College June 2004 Peru trip;
Spots still open for educational travel

GOSHEN, Ind. – Imagine the jungle-lined Tambopata River from a canoe, climbing to the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu and shopping in the Indian market on the crowded streets of Chinchero, Peru.

These experiences and many more are part of the schedule for the “Peru Adventure,” an offering of the Goshen College educational travel program. Dean Rhodes, assistant professor of Spanish, is leading the trip, scheduled from June 3 through June 17, 2004, and open to any interested travelers.

The group will spend several days in Lima before flying to Puerto Maldonado, where they will stay at Tambopata Jungle Lodge with treks through the rain forest. They will visit the ancient capital of the Incan Empire Cuzco and take the train to Machu Picchu, “The Lost City of the Incas.” A trekking option will take travelers on an overnight experience while others visit the Sacred Valley. A final night in Lima will give time for enjoying the beautiful beaches.

The trip offers an opportunity to learn more about Peru than a normal vacation package would offer because of Rhodes’ extensive experience and interest in Peru. Rhodes has lived in Peru six years and has had experience leading eight groups to Spanish-speaking countries, including Peru. During the summer of 2003, he received a grant to do research in a Lima “Shantytown” and in several rural Andean villages, surveying the rural to urban migration patterns of the highland Quechua Indians. He is also leading a student course in Peru in May 2004. His expertise will add significantly to the experiences on the trip itinerary.

For more information or to register for the trip call the Goshen College Welcome Center at (574) 535-7566 or mailto:joannp@goshen.edu. The cost of the trip is $3,395, with a $98 additional cost for the optional Trek. A $200 nonrefundable deposit is required to hold a spot on the trip. The package includes all travel and lodging costs, entrance fees to sites on the itinerary, all breakfasts, 10 lunches and nine group dinners.
