Umble Center's 25th year celebrated with 'You Can't Take It With You';
Goshen College fall play presented Nov. 14-15, 21-23
GOSHEN, Ind. -- In 1978, the first mainstage play was performed on Goshen College's brand new Umble Center stage. Twenty-five years later, in celebration of the building's anniversary, GC Players and the college's theater department are performing "You Can't Take It With You" for the fall 2003 mainstage performance."You Can't Take It With You," a comedy by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, directed at Goshen College by Doug Liechty Caskey, will be performed in Umble Center at 8 p.m. on Nov. 14, 15, 21 and 22, and at 3 p.m. on Nov. 23.
From the opening moment of
this classic American play set in the mid-20th century until the
final curtain, the audience will experience the range of emotion
from comic to romantic to heartbreak amidst the quirky
individualism of a family that truly cares for its members and all
those who enter the door of their household.
"The play offers our
actors the challenge of portraying realistic, yet comic, characters
in a large ensemble cast," said Liechty Caskey. "The key for us
will be to avoid overplaying the humor, thus allowing the
quirkiness and sometimes ridiculous situations of the characters
combined with honest emotion to engage and entertain the audience."
Liechty Caskey played the role of Mr. Kirby in Goshen College's
1981 production of the show.
Sixteen of the 27 cast and
crew members are from the Goshen area and four of the principle
cast roles are first-year students.
Tickets cost $8
for general admission and $5 for students and seniors. Advance
tickets are available at the Welcome Center by calling (574)
535-7566. The Umble Center box office will open one hour before
each show time and can be reached at (574) 535-7395.
