GOSHEN, Ind. – “Feed Your Eyes, Mind and Spirit” presents excellence in Deaf performance and entertainment with Debbie Rennie, a Deaf storyteller and poet from Sweden, and Peter Cook, a Deaf entertainer and storyteller, in this ongoing series of seminars offered by the four-year American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter Training Program at Goshen College in the Umble Center at 7 p.m. on Nov. 19.

Rennie, from Sweden, has taught poetry in sign language to European professional deaf artists and, for the past several years, has taught theater arts of acting, poetry, storytelling and improvisation to Deaf children. She also has written short skits about Deaf culture and has worked extensively throughout Scandinavia as a theater teacher.

From Chicago, Cook creates original stories using a combination of ASL, mime and dance. He is an internationally known Deaf performing artist whose work incorporates ASL, pantomime, storytelling, acting and movement. Cook has traveled extensively around the United States, Europe and Asia. He is a co-founder of the nonprofit “Flying Words Project” and PC Productions which promotes ASL literature and Deaf performers. Cook currently teaches at Purdue University.

Enjoyable for all audiences, the performance will be interpreted into spoken English so it is accessible for hearing audiences less familiar with ASL. Umble Center is accessible to those using wheelchairs and others with physical limitations. Funding for this event is made possible in part through Indiana Chapter of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and by the Goshen College ASL Club in cooperation with the Hungry Eyes Festival.

Tickets for this “Feed Your Eyes, Mind and Spirit” presentation are $7 per person and may be purchased by calling (574) 535-7566 or e-mailing joannp@goshen.edu. Deaf callers please use relay. Advance ticket purchase is recommended, as seats are limited. Tickets are nonrefundable.

This workshop is being offered for .2 CEUs in deaf culture at the introductory level; for EIC holders this workshop meets Category 2 requirements, approved. DHHS is the CMP sponsor.
