Math Competition Winners!
Five Goshen College students participated in the Putnam Mathematical Competition on December 2, 2017. The 4,638 participants worked for six hours on twelve difficult problems. Since each solution can earn up to 10 points, the maximum score is 120. The overall winner earned 89 points and the median score was 1 point (that is not a typo–more than half of the participants scored 0 or 1 point this year)! Goshen’s top scorers were Julian Harnish (17 points placing him in the 81st percentile), Kenan Bitikofer (10 points placing him in the 70th percentile), and Lydia Miller (8 points placing her in the 65th percentile). This also placed Goshen College 104th out of the 574 institutions participating. Although there have been individual Goshen College students who have scored higher in previous competitions, this is the highest the school has ever placed. Congratulations!
