If you have a passion for biology and want to explore the subject in greater depth, our Molecular Biology & Biochemistry major is perfect for you. Students pursuing this major will develop a fundamental understanding of cell biology, computational biology, and developmental biology, focusing on events that occur at the cellular and biochemical levels. This approach will prepare you with a solid foundation for a wide range of careers in the health professions and further study in graduate programs and professional schools.
Follow a Methodical and Interdisciplinary Study of Biological Sciences
Molecular biologists research and study living cells, their functions, and the complex molecules that make them work. They use this knowledge in genetic engineering and molecular genetics to find new ways to treat or prevent diseases. Through this major you will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty members who are leaders in their field, and you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.
Biology department graduates have made successful careers as doctors, dentists, pharmacists, physical therapists, and veterinarians, among other professions.
How Goshen College Prepares Students for the Future of Healthcare
We are a community of student scholars, researchers, and academics pursuing a rigorous and multidisciplinary approach to cell biology, biological interactions, and biological macromolecules, with an emphasis on events that take place at the cellular and biochemical levels. Our science education, life sciences, and biology courses prepare students to become world-class scientists, doctors, and other types of health professionals. Most students interested in working as health professionals (in medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, pharmacy, and veterinary) choose this major.
The molecular biology and biochemistry program core courses and elective courses aim to provide you with an excellent education in this field within the setting of a broader multidisciplinary education. Students in this program will:
Be involved in hands-on and experiential learning that will focus on the biochemical and genetic pathways necessary for life.
Use advanced molecular biology and biochemical tools.
Apply hypothesis and research-driven approaches to answer complex biological problems throughout the program until their senior thesis.
Be involved in internship programs and undergraduate research experiences with faculty.
Examine the crucial role that molecular biology and biochemistry studies contribute to our understanding of disease.
