Hickory Scholars
Like its sibling program, Maple Scholars, Hickory Scholars is designed to bring together students and faculty for summer research and scholarship. The difference is that Hickory Scholars is centered at the college’s field station and environmental learning center, Merry Lea. Located 30 miles southeast of main campus, this nearly 1200-acre site has numerous beautiful habitats and facilities. Students can live on-site in the highly sustainable housing of Reith Village, enjoy food grown right out their door at the Merry Lea Teaching Farm, and get to know many of their non-human neighbors across the property (as well as neighbors who are human!). All Hickory Scholars share weekly meetings to keep up-to-date on progress in others’ projects and to practice their own academic communication skills. And periodic gatherings bring the entire group of Hickory and Maple Scholars together for learning and fun. Scholars receive free housing on-site and a $4000 stipend for 8 weeks of work between May 28 and July 19, 2024. Take a look at the project descriptions below and submit your application as described here by 5p on Friday, February 23.
