Statement

The idea behind the paintings in this exhibition began as a technical problem.  I enjoy the challenges of painting the folds and surfaces of fabrics as well as the forms of the human figure, so I decided to combine these interests.  The mystery of a completely shrouded figure also intrigued me.  The anonymity of the covered figure allows us to view the figure in each painting as a sort of Everywoman or Everyman, while at the same time begging the question of what aspects of individuality are hidden beneath the drapery.  Nevertheless, what I began as a technical issue evolved into something more meaningful to me.  I have deliberately left this statement and the titles of the pieces vague, so as not to impose my interpretations on you, the viewer, or to imbue the paintings with more than what is actually there, laid down in paint on the canvas.

The senior exhibition can be viewed as a culmination of the art major's college career; I prefer to view mine as a continuation of my work as an artist and as an ongoing process.  KRISTA KAUFFMANN, April, 1999
