The second half of our second field trip was spent roaming about the ruins of Avebury. Avebury is a beautiful ride from Salisbury, full of gaping spaces and lush yellow fields. After two and a half weeks spent in the city, it was a much needed time to breathe and appreciate the landscapes that are full of history. Avebury is Europe’s largest neolithic stone circle. It is similar in comparison to the iconic Stonehenge, which we supposedly passed (though I saw NO stones). These stones are situated on the perimeter of the quaint village. Our allotted time was short so I spent time frolicking about. If I’ve learned anything from this trip, it is that I am no city slicker. This has put a damper on my dreams of being the next big pop star sensation who takes the city by storm, but I’ll settle for a burly and quiet country man and some sheep by my side.
Speaking of sheep…They were everywhere, and we got to run around with them. Though this is nothing like running with wolves, since they are sluggish and seem unfazed by the regular tourists, it was quite the excitement.
Another seemingly exciting moment was seeing the stones that are mysterious in nature. There are different theories explaining how and why they are there, but I’ve come to decide extraterrestrial beings definitely plotted to confuse humans for centuries. Job well done.
Since this is not Stonehenge, we were allowed to get up close and personal with the stones. Some climbed to the top, others took pictures, but I squealed. My entire trip has been a series of squeals that come from excitement. However, the field trips outside of the city have consisted of my happiest moments here in England. I am a nature-loving, history nerd. So, being outside and allowed to move about freely in the Queen’s Ann Lace, amongst little sheepy, in a place that has been there since 2600 BC, is quite literally perfect.
After coming off of my high, I was able realize how truly grateful I am for these experiences with the people who make this trip so wonderfully spectacular. In conclusion, the city is large, the countryside is grand, and I’m a happy squealing, sheep-chasing student soaking in every moment.
