After a 2-day delay due to a cancelled flight to Miami because of weather, the 18 students arrived on Wednesday to a sunny welcome. The highs every day here are in the mid-80s this time of the year. We took a (hot and crowded) bus across Santo Domingo to a church retreat center where the students spent about a day, learning about their host families, typical customs, safety measures, staying healthy, and more essentials for the next 19 days.
After supper on Thursday the students had a second bus trip to a Mennonite church in eastern Santo Domingo where nine local families were waiting to meet their new adopted daughters. While the students were fairly nervous, which is typical, they all did well. Each family has two GC students who will room and board (breakfast and supper) with them, practice their Spanish, and experience Dominican culture up close.
