Our day started with gathering around the pavilion near the basketball courts greeted by Antonio R. Zayas, who is the director of La Academia Menonita Betania. We all separated off into our designated groups determined by different grade levels we signed up for ranging from pre-k all the way up to escuela superior (high school). We spent the portion of our day with the students participating in activities that included dancing, conversing with them, reading books to them, and the like. I personally spent time with Kindergartners and got the chance to learn their dances for their upcoming graduation called “logros”, which is their transition to first grade. My partner and I finished up our time by reading a book to the students about the concept of being understanding and had time to hear their reflections about what they just learned. It was interesting observing how students start off with a prayer and genuinely care for each other.
After we finished spending time in the classrooms, we grabbed some lunch and had free time to either play volleyball with students or conserve our energy to later participate in the basketball tournament that was going to be held. Both the girls and boys brought competitive energy and led to fun companionship on and off the court. Later on, before dinner we had reflection time in small groups about our highs, lows, and highlights of our experiences in the classrooms. Shortly after, we were able to enjoy a delicious and authentic Puerto Rican meal made by the kind volunteers. A lucky few of us got to meet our host families and partook in fun activities that were super engaging and competitive in spirit. We wrapped up the night by spending some time in the Mennonite church hearing some wonderful worship songs and had hot chocolate y pan con some of our host parents.
Later on, this week, we will all be splitting off to our respective host families and spending time with them in Aibonito as we further learn about the rich and intriguing Puerto Rican culture. I have been having a wonderful time spending time away from the city and in the beautiful nature that Coamo has to offer. I am looking forward to exploring Aibonito as I continue to expand my worldview lens and continue to shape what service means to me and others in my group.
