Before leaving the Academia Menonita Betania we went on a short hike led by Eileen up a steep road leading into the hills which overlook the school and although it was a tiring walk, it was well worth it; from the top we could see the rolling hills and beautiful landscape. We also met a couple who lived at the top of the hill and learned about their personal struggles during Hurricane María. These included loss of electricity for months on end and the destruction of their house which was originally in the trees and had to be rebuilt closer to the ground. They also informed us that they were one of the only houses who still had water which they would supply to the people living in the local area and despite their struggles, this brought the community closer together.
We spent the rest of the day meeting our host families and getting settled into our new homes for the week. My group took a car ride through winding roads which descended into a valley, to a small town just outside of Aibonito called La Plata. Several of us are staying with Emma and Juan Carlos who are very welcoming. They live on a farm with their three children. Other members of their family including aunts, uncles, and cousins live on the same street which is where some of the other groups are staying. Being located in a valley, it is surrounded by hills and trees, offering a great view.
The next day we attended a small Mennonite Church 45 minutes away where Juan Carlos is the pastor and his children contribute by singing, playing instruments, and reading scriptures. It was a unique experience with lots of music and an upbeat atmosphere. After this, we visited a local river where some of us took on a 30 minute hike through the river and trees to some rocks where we could jump from, into the water. After a long but exciting day we returned back, ate dinner and got some rest. Tomorrow we will participate in community service in Aibonito.
