Baseball is more than just a game. To not only myself, but Nicaraguans as well, baseball is life. Through our first three games here in Nicaragua I have been taken aback by how much a simple game with a bat and ball can impact entire communities at a time. Once stepping on the field littered with horse manure and a soccer goal in the middle of the right field, I was not only shocked but amazed. This team and this community had nothing, but they didn’t let a little crap – literally – stop them from doing something they love. As I take a look at my circumstances I truly realize just how fortunate I am not only on the field but off. With swarms of kids begging for baseballs and autographs, I felt a compassion I had never felt before. Just a simple baseball can make someone’s day, and that’s pretty awesome to me. My team and I certainly don’t deserve the praise we receive from these Nicaraguans, but I have taken it upon myself to impact each opponent we come in contact with in a positive manner. Yes, that is very difficult to do with the language barrier, but I believe actions speak louder words, so I will do anything I can to use the game I have been fortunate to love to represent myself and GC in a Christ-centered manner.
