Greetings, friends!
It’s almost 6:00 in London and we’ve all turned in our final projects, meaning we’re completely finished with the academic portion of the Arts in London class! It’s hard to believe that in just over one short day our three-week whirlwind experience will come to a close. While the work is finished (except for the professors…), tonight and tomorrow promise to be packed full while we try to tie up our loose ends and finish our must-do lists. Some of us will return home on Wednesday, some of us will remain in England and Europe to travel.
This blog post is mostly about my final project, which I chose to do through a more creative lens (forgive the pun). I chose to examine the theatrical, artistic, and musical function of color in Coventry, Salisbury, and Southwark Cathedrals through photography. I mostly found that color is used to direct the eye to a certain place, and the specific way that color is used (analogous or complementary colors, historical or religious figures, abstract or concrete subject matter) gives it more a lean towards theatre, art, or music. I chose to present the photos I took in black and white, while leaving specific parts of the photo in color. I wanted to explore this type of photography, and this way the viewer can better focus on the colors in the photo, since cathedrals tend to be very elaborate and ornate spaces. I finished five photos for each place, for a total of fifteen. I hope you enjoy and are able to connect with these images as I have been able to do!
