Learn the Fundamentals of Writing and Media Ethics in Journalism
This major is for students seeking a career in journalism and mass communication, or a related field. Through coursework, internships, and extracurricular activities, journalism students learn to produce news for print media, broadcast, and digital media outlets. You will also develop an understanding of journalistic ethics, law, critical thinking, public relations, broadcast journalism, and global journalism while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
The Skills You Need to Succeed in the Digital Era
Our program offers opportunities and outcomes that rival journalism schools. Graduates of our program pursue various journalism careers, or can continue their education towards master’s degrees in journalism at larger schools like Northwestern University and Boston University. Through Goshen’s journalism programs you will develop the skills you need for success in the digital age, including storytelling for different platforms, using social media for news gathering & distribution, data visualization, audio and video production, design principles, and hands-on opportunities with media organizations.
Our journalism program features supportive faculty members, small class sizes that facilitate individualized attention, and real-world experience through internships and extracurricular activities. Each journalism student will contribute to the student-run weekly newspaper, The Record, which regularly wins awards from the Indiana Collegiate Press Association, including “Newspaper of the Year.“
Journalism students will also complete at least two internships as a journalism major or minor, likely in highly competitive news settings. In recent years, journalism graduates have interned at Beacon Press, Edible Michiana, The Elkhart Truth, Sojourner’s, The South Bend Tribune, and Voice of America.

Olivia Copsey is an alumni journalism and psychology double major, graphic design minor from Goshen. She transferred from Hesston College in 2017. She was in Women’s World Choir and worked for the school paper The Record.
Kate Stoltzfus, a 2014 graduate from Goshen, left Goshen College with an English writing and journalism degree and a deep appreciation for her home at GC.
As a copy editor at The New York Times, Duane Stoltzfus seemingly had it all. But when Goshen College offered Duane a position as a professor of communications in 2000, he couldn't refuse.
