DEVOTIONAL:
When reflecting on the theme “awesome deeds we do not expect,” I am reminded of an incident from my summer. I was driving from my home in Ohio to the peaceful woods of Camp Friedenswald in Michigan. About an hour from my destination, my car started acting up. I discovered after pulling into a fast food drive through, I could only drive in reverse.
I backed up in utter disbelief. I know very little about cars, so after talking with my dad, I realized I needed transmission fluid. I sat down on the curb and prayed. I remember thinking that this would be a great time for God to help me out.
Just as I looked up, a man in a mechanics uniform walked over to me. With only a few words, he helped me purchase and add the transmission fluid into the car. I remember asking, “Are you an angel?” He laughed and told me I should tell his boss. I offered him money and with a chuckle he replied, “You’d better drive fast.”
Wow, I am still in shock. It was definitely a deed I did not expect. I agree with the Psalmist; we are sometimes in the desert of Negev, we sow tears and there is weeping, however, “The Lord has done great things.”
Look for the Lord to work in the discouraging circumstances of life, like cars that only drive in reverse. And you may experience what I experienced – awesome deeds you do not expect.

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream.
2Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”
3The Lord has done great things for us, and we rejoiced.
4Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like the watercourses in the Negeb.
5May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy.
6Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves.
