Job Summary: 

This position is responsible for the maintenance and repairs of the lawnmowers, tractors, golf carts, gators, and small engine landscaping tools used by Goshen College’s Grounds department. The responsibilities also include assisting the grounds department with moving, tree trimming, leaf management, and snow removal, in the non-growing season. Additionally, this position assists with the organization and management of physical plant storage buildings.  This position is also available for a wide variety of “odd jobs” as directed, that assist other physical plant departments.

This is a part-time position with an hourly wage of $18.56 to $19.56 and is eligible for some benefits.

Essential Functions: 

  1. Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all small engine equipment.
  2. Responsible for regular maintenance for vehicles including lawnmowers, tractors, golf carts, gators, etc.
  3. Communicator with vendors if equipment needs to be sent in for repairs.
  4. Assists in maintaining, cleaning, and keeping the garage in order.
  5. Assists in tracing down electrical problems on assigned vehicles, using mechanical testing equipment.
  6. Responsible for replacing brake linings on assigned vehicles as needed with periodic checks throughout the year.

Other Duties:

  1. Assist other physical plant departments when necessary.
  2. Rebuild parts on mechanical equipment, which were defective in design or are worn out, if possible.
  3. Construct equipment where welding is a major part, if possible.
  4. Assist the Grounds department with moving items.
  5. Assist Grounds personnel with snow removal.
  6. Operate forklift, tractor, and other equipment.
  7. Assists in delivery and set up of heavy items.

Building Trades Requirements:

Depending on work requirements, holidays may be designated “floating holidays.”  Employees who work over the holidays may reschedule their holidays for a later time in the same way that they would schedule vacation days.

Hours:

The hours for this position are flexible and will be determined between the employee and the supervisor. It is assumed that the majority of the hours would fall within the regular Facilities Department hours of 7:30 am – 4:30 pm. Some early morning, evening, and weekend hours may be necessary during heavy snowfall events.

Education and/or Experience:

High School degree and some basic courses in auto mechanics and or small engine repair.  Familiarity with basic automotive test equipment and procedures.  One year of basic auto mechanic work or 6 months of garage experience.

Skills Required:

Mechanical and diagnostic skills for motor vehicles and small engine overhaul and repairs.  Welding and braising experience would be helpful.  Ability to assist in diagnosis and determine routine mechanical problems.  Able to operate vehicles such as a forklift, trucks, and tractors.

Physical Demands:

  • Able to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Medium visual activity.
