Julia Schiavone Camacho

Julia teaches history and writing, including an introductory academic writing course and a research and writing seminar on the history of world Christianity. Julia is Catholic. From Tucson, she grew up traveling across the Arizona/Sonora borderlands. Julia writes nonfiction and fiction. She is the author of Chinese Mexicans: Transpacific Migration and the Search for a Homeland, 1910-1960 (North Carolina, 2012). A spinoff set on a broader canvas, her current book project is: Chinese Latinos: Forging the Transpacific Family, Diasporic Community, and Memory. An article manuscript from this project is currently under consideration with an academic journal. Julia’s short nonfiction appears in a recent issue of Hayden’s Ferry Review. Her short fiction appears in The Florida Review.  An excerpt from her historical novel manuscript, Across the Pacific—about the personal consequences of a vicious anti-Chinese crusade in Mexico—appears in The Hopper and was nominated for Best of the Net Anthology. An excerpt from A Sensible Man, a historical romance novel, appears in The Coachella Review. Another short historical fiction piece, inspired by the life of Afong Moy and told from the perspective of her interpreter and attendant, Atung, has been accepted in a Women’s Fiction Writers Association anthology, Feisty Deeds: Historical Fictions of Daring Women, forthcoming on International Women’s Day, 2024.
