Ruth the Moabite

Lazarus
A 2016 mixed media series that focuses on the individual’s response to being given the gift of a second chance at life.
Adoration of the Shepherds
A 2016 mixed media collage series that focuses on the individual’s response to the reality and spiritual shifting brought on by a new birth in competition with one’s on-going circumstances and responsibilities.
Pharaoh’s Army
A 2014 mixed media series that focuses on the individual sacrifices soldiers make in the line of duty at the moment of that sacrifice.
Jonah
A 2014 mixed media series that focuses on the individual’s search for direction and calling under stressful conditions.
Job
A 2012 mixed media series that focuses on the individual’s response to one’s life dismantled through challenges. The Old Testament book of Job is an interesting study in human reactions to stress, to expectations, to faith, to life, and to God. Two passages that were particularly inspirational to me in this series were Job 23:17, “Yet I am not silenced by the darkness…” and Job 28:12, “But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell?”
Saint Sebastian
A 2008-9 mixed media series that focuses on a range individual responses to external challenges, both physical and psychological, as embodied by first martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. Saint Sebastian was a Christian saint martyred by the Romans in the 3rd Century. He is most commonly depicted in art and literature tied to a post or tree and shot with arrows, which was the first attempted martyrdom of Sebastian because he sought to convert his fellow Roman soldiers.
The Healing of Saint Sebastian
A 2010 mixed media series focusing on coming to terms with surviving a traumatic experience. (Tended back to health by Saint Irene, Saint Sebastian was later martyred again—beaten to death—on the direct orders of Roman Emperor Diocletian.)
S-E-E G-O-D
A 2011 mixed media series of mixed media drawings commissioned for the Mennonite Church USA Offices in Elkhart, Indiana. S-E-E G-O-D is by the American poet Walt Whitman. In his poem, Song of Myself, he says, “In the faces of men and women I see God, and in my own face in the glass, I find letters from God dropped in the street, and every one is signed by God’s name.” I took the first part of the line and treated it literally, but reinterpreted the words ‘letters’ and ‘signed’ to address Mennonite concerns for inclusion as well as an exploration of the multiple dimensions of visual communication.
Carmina Burana
A 2013 400-plus slide image presentation as part of the performance of Carmina Burana by the Goshen College Music Program. Images are a combinations of photos of Gothic sculptures from the the facade of Chartes Cathedral with contemporary photos of objects, hands, and hands interacting with objects.
