The Eunice (Schrock) and Olen Kandel Endowed Scholarship Fund
Eunice Schrock grew up in a single parent family in Illinois that valued the Mennonite faith and education. After her two older brothers left home her mother, Josephine Yordy Schrock, made Eunice’s education her top priority. When it was time for Eunice to go to college, Goshen College was the unquestioned choice. In order to make ends meet, Josephine moved to Goshen with Eunice and worked at the college in the housekeeping department.
After graduation from Goshen College in 1940 Eunice moved to Berlin, Ohio where she taught in the public high school. It was there that she met Olen Kandel and they were married in 1943. After Olen finished his Civilian Pubic Service term, they returned to central Illinois where they raised their family. The Mennonite Church, family and education were all very important to Eunice and Olen. They were lifelong advocates for Goshen College and were very proud that two of their children and three of their grandchildren graduated from Goshen. After Eunice died in 2002, Olen expressed a desire to make a financial contribution to the college in her memory. These arrangements had not been finalized at the time of Olen’s death in 2004.
We are honored to establish this endowment in the memory of Eunice and Olen as a tribute to their dedication to education in general and to the Mennonite Church and Goshen College in particular.
