Francese Latta Scholarship Fund
Following the death of Mrs. Ina Kronk Slate in 1957, her daughter Francese Slate Latta decided to continue the support of the International Student Program at Goshen College which her mother had started. (Incidentally, Mrs. Ina Slate graduated from Goshen College as a grandmother in 1936.)
From 1958 to her death in 1978 Mrs. Latta annually contributed the amount required for room and board for one student. At times, with her consent, the gift was divided between several students depending upon needs as perceived by the International Student Advisor.
In the early years when strength and circumstances permitted, Mrs. Francese Latta established a personal relationship with the recipients. There were times when the Latta’s entertained the entire group of foreign students in their home and shared their foreign travel experiences.
Over the 20 years Mrs. Latta’s contributions assisted over 20 different students with partial to full room and board. The $20,000 endowment bequest at the time of her death is indicative of Francese Latta’s deep interest in the program and its continuance for the future.
Mrs. Latta was a sensitive, intelligent Christian woman. Having traveled widely, she had broad interests which she shared generously, locally and beyond. Her contribution to the development for international relationships deserves our admiration and gratitude. It is a legacy we cherish.
