Madlyn W. Salter Scholarship Fund
Madlyn W. Salter was born on December 19, 1913 in Rochester , Indiana, the daughter of Ort L. Walter and Hazelbell (Hazel) Dutter Walter. Her father was a teacher, principal and later the superintendent of schools in Goshen, Indiana from 1935-42. He finished his career as the Indiana State Director of Vocational Rehabilitation in the Department of Public Instruction.
Madlyn graduated from Goshen High School in 1931, received an AB from Indiana University in 1935, received a Bachelor of Science degree from Goshen College in 1936 and finally a Master of Arts (Teachers College) from Columbia University in 1943.
Madlyn taught elementary school in Stratford, Connecticut for a few years where she met and married her first husband, Edmund H. Judson, Jr. in 1944. She continued to teach and was also involved in church and community affairs until Edmund retired from banking. They then traveled extensively in Europe and throughout the East Coast on their yacht. They did not have children and Edmund passed away in June of 1981 after 37 years of marriage. (He had two sons from a prior marriage).
Madlyn married James Salter, Jr. (a widower) in January 1984. They had know each other socially from a few Stratford organizations. The traveled extensively and continued to be active in their communities during the nine years of their marriage. Madlyn passed away suddenly on July 26, 1993 at the age of 79.
Madlyn’s many interests included reading, gardening, entertaining, music, art, traveling, boating and the history of Stratford. Her memberships included: university and college alumni organizations, Stratford Historical Society, Stratford Library Association, Congregational Church Choir, Housatonic Boat Club, DAR, Stratford Garden Club and Sterling House.
