The Francisco Romero & Refugio Goytortua de Romero Scholarship Fund
Growing up with her two siblings in Tampico, Mexico, Guadalupe (Pita) Romero realized already as a young child that both her father and mother highly valued education. Her father, being one of 11 children in a family without great financial resources, was not able to go to college. Her mother, while not trained as a teacher, was always very interested in and dedicated to teaching others, often teaching reading and math skills that enabled them to improve their quality of life. She allowed (even encouraged) her own maids to go to school in order for them to learn and grow.
Both of Pita’s parents made sacrifices in order for their three children and others around them to have a better life and to receive a good education. It is for this reason that Pita and Octavio wish to honor her parents with this scholarship. Octavio was a student at Goshen College from 1948 to 1950 and when Octavio and Pita were considering their charitable estate planning, they agreed they wanted to assist future generations of students to be able to afford the high quality, unique educational experience of Goshen College.
