Both Carol and Ron graduated from Goshen College, Carol in 1965 with a degree in elementary education and Ron in 1971 with a degree in religion. The fund was created by Dwight and Carol Grieser in honor of Levi and Irene Hartzler as a way of continuing their desire to help others with their education at Goshen College.
H. Harold Hartzler (better known during his teaching years at Goshen College as H3 or Cubey) grew up in Belleville, Pa. He graduated from Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, in 1930.
Florence Marie Rheinheimer-Harnish was born near Shipshewana, Indiana on January 15, 1930. She attended Goshen College from 1948-1953, and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA from 1960-1961.
The Haney family has established this needs-based scholarship at Goshen College to support and encourage financially deserving students from northern Indiana in pursuing their careers. The value of education at a highly regarded Christian college which stresses the importance of service to others and exists in their hometown is appreciated by the family.
This scholarship is the result of combined interests of Ron and Caryl Guth and Myrl D. and Phyllis Nofziger. Since Hurricane Katrina many Mennonites and Amish have donated their time with "hands on" labor, finances, and other efforts to restore the homes and communities of those destroyed in the south central areas of the United States.
Reflecting on the role of physical activity, Ruth described her personal philosophy: “I believe in the totality of a person, the interrelatedness of the mind, body and spirit. A denial in one area will affect all areas.”
Ralph Gunden described his life as truly illuminated by the family into which he was born. In her diary, his mother, Agnes Albrecht Gunden wrote on June 10, 1923, “At 5:00 pm an eight and one-half pound boy came to live with us."
Lillian K. Amstutz was born in the farming community of Kidron, Ohio to parents who had completed their formal education in eighth grade. However, they encouraged their children to never stop learning and to pass on their knowledge and experiences to others.
During the 50 years from 1950 to 2000, thousands of students enrolled in and completed mathematics courses at Goshen College. Many of those students were mathematics majors.
