Robert Buschert, professor of physics, is one of the distinguished teachers and researchers at Goshen College. He pioneered the idea of having undergraduate science students do significant research as part of their course of study and set up the Turner Laboratory to do that experimentation.
When the subject of this gift for scholarships comes up, Howard and Myra Brembeck don’t want to talk about themselves. ‘Just make our part about a paragraph,’ Howard said. Instead, they want people to know about their friends in whose name the gift was made: J. Lawrence and Harriet Burkholder.
Harold and Florence Bucher came to the Mennonite Church by way of the Lutheran Church and have a long history of service to the church. Although Harold’s grandfather was Lutheran when he came to the U.S. from Europe, he became a Mennonite minister in Adams County, Pennsylvania.
When Robert Bender was a child, attending Prairie Street Mennonite Church in Elkhart, Indiana, his Sunday school class helped support a missionary family in India, the family of M. C. and Lydia Lehman. Specifically, Robert’s class’s contributions went toward the support of one of the Lehman children, Carolyn.
Throughout their lives Orin and Marie Ramseyer Beechy have cultivated a keen interest in international relations and peace through contacts with church agencies and Goshen College. Orin grew up in Berlin, Ohio, a small town in Holmes County, the middle child in a family with two other brothers, Ralph and Atlee.
This scholarship has been established in honor of a woman who believed in the power of education. She passed that belief on to others and encouraged young people to pursue a college degree while at the same time advocating to make the dream possible.
Dr. H. Clair Amstutz and his wife Florence have been an active and integral part of Goshen College for the last 35 years. Both attended CC, where they learned that their Mennonite faith was something to be treasured.
Mr. John M. Zook and Mrs. Rosemary (Stieglitz) Zook graduated from Goshen College and gave four and a half years, 1958-1963, of their lives to care for and educate orphan as well as needy boys at Mennonite Vocational Middle and High Schools in Taegu, South Korea, after the Korean War of 1950 devastated the country.
“I believe there’s a great need for scholarships for undergraduate nursing programs,” said Verna Zimmerman, associate professor ementa of nursing at Goshen College. “Nurses need to finish a baccalaureate program before they can pursue more specific study in graduate school, so it’s important to encourage them to finish school.”
Rachel Ann Zehr graduated from Goshen College in 1960 with a degree in elementary education. After 2 years of teaching in the public school system, Rachel served a term of Voluntary Service in the Philadelphia, PA area.
