The Kenneth Steider Memorial Scholarship has been created to recognize the many years Kenneth served in education, healthcare and teaching English as a Second Language while living in Taiwan and the important role Goshen College played in Kenneth’s life.
Louis and Wilma Stealy observed that both the value and the cost of the quality, higher education Goshen College provides, increased greatly in their later years. They knew that a majority of the students at Goshen received some form, at varying levels, of financial aid and that for many students, this aid is what enabled them to stay in college.
Arthur Sprunger (1897-1972) was a prominent Mennonite artist whose creative life extended for more than 50 years. Born in Berne, Indiana, he graduated from Goshen College in 1922, and he taught art at Goshen Junior and Senior High Schools for 41 years, retiring in 1963.
Craig Springer of Hopedale Illinois began throwing a ball to his mom and dad as soon as his hand was large enough to grasp it. This began a lifelong desire to throw a ball from the pitcher’s mound to the plate.
Given Susie’s Christian faith and commitment, her love for teaching within the church, as well as her unfulfilled desire for a college education, it is fitting that she should be honored through a scholarship to help Bible and Religion, and/or Youth Ministries students with financial need.
Philip Thompson Smith was born in Evanston, Illinois on March 25, 1964. He attended schools in Wisconsin and Texas before graduating from Barrington High School, Barrington, Illinois in 1982.
Dale Showalter was born and raised on a farm in Mishawaka, Indiana; he was the oldest son of Howard and Neva Showalter. His parents passed away during his teenage years, and Dale being the oldest son, became a very responsible person.
Passion for music. Music brought Lon Sherer and Kathryn Summers together as college students at Michigan State University in the early 1950's. It was their junior year and Kathryn, a student at Goshen College, was taking a year in her home state to study piano at MSU.
The foundation board members decided to provide a gift to my father's alma mater, to secure scholarships for students who demonstrate financial need, including international students. It is our hope that the recipients of these scholarships will be able to complete their education and use their knowledge and gifts in fulfilling the college's motto, "Culture For Service", and be able to be persons who give in order to serve others.
After a long and distinguished career as a professor of journalism, Werner J. Severin of Austin, Texas, chose to establish an endowed scholarship in nursing at Goshen College to honor his late mother, Catherine Garots Severin of Trenton, N.J.
