Charles Hahn Scholarship Fund

Charles Hahn’s daughter, Mabel, remembers her father as a quiet hard-working man, endowed with a system of simple values that kept him out of the limelight. Instead, he devoted his energies to his work and the raising of his seven children. One thing set him apart from many other men of his time, however, and that was a strong belief in the value of education. Mr. Hahn encouraged it in his children, and made it available to them if they showed an interest.

In memory of her father, and in tribute to his beliefs, Mabel Hahn has established a scholarship fund for students interested in attending Goshen College.

Charles Hahn was born in October 1879, and lived his lifetime in Madison and Penn Townships in Indiana. In 1903 he married Ema Jane Lechlitner. He had worked as a stone mason before his marriage, but afterward he began a lifetime of farming. His first wife died in 1916, and in 1921 he married Laura Shirk. He was a faithful member of Olive Mennonite Church near Wakarusa.

Mabel Hahn is a child of her father’s first marriage. She was treasurer of Bock Industries, Elkhart, Indiana beginning with the firm in 1942 and working until her retirement.  Mabel died February 21, 2006.
