Samuel H. and Clara K. Lehman Fund

Samuel H. (1896—1968) and Clara Kennel (1894-1974) Lehman, farmers, carpenter and housewife gave strong spiritual and moral leadership to their family, church and community. They reared a family of twelve, seven sons (one died in infancy) and five daughters to maturity during the depression, yet always shared their home and table with family, friends and those less fortunate.

Samuel was born and raised in northern New York State near Beaver Falls. Clara, born and raised near Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, made her home in Lewis County after their marriage. They settled on a farm in the beautiful Black River Valley near Castorland, there raising their children. When they retired they moved to a hill overlooking that same valley.

Samuel provided leadership and guidance in establishing the New Breman Mennonite Church, was active in the Sunday School, in music as song leader, and in special music groups.

Clara with her sweet quiet spirit supported him and together they led and guided their children in the way of Christ.

Although denied the opportunity of higher education their thirst for knowledge was instilled in their children, as evidenced by all of them attending institutions of higher learning. Ten of the twelve children spent some time at Goshen College, four graduating from Goshen College and others transferring to other schools. A number of in-laws and grand children also have attended Goshen College.

As a great tribute to their memory, it is fitting and proper to combine their love of church and learning, and their unselfish service to others, by establishing a scholarship fund for needy students at Goshen College.
