Lawrence and Grace Nofziger Grant
During their lives, Lawrence and Grace Nofziger shared generously of themselves and their resources with their family and community. Now after their deaths, their legacy of generosity continues on in this scholarship.
Lawrence “Skeeter” and Grace Lugbill Nofziger both grew up in Mennonite farm families in the Archbold and Pettisville, Ohio area. They were married in 1939 and lived in Archbold all of their lives. Both were associated with their family business, Lugbill Brothers Inc., all of their working lives. Grace worked in the livestock marketing office, while Lawrence worked in management at Lugbill Supply Center and directed farming operations. They were charter members of Zion Mennonite Church in Archbold.
Grace and Lawrence were highly energetic and active people who loved to travel, go out to dinner, and spend time with family and friends. Skeeter was full of fun and practical jokes and teased everyone he met, especially children. Well known as a cook and hostess, Grace entertained frequently in their home. She was also very artistic — in flower arranging, cake decorating, china painting and other areas.
Although the Nofzigers never had any children of their own, they found plenty of children to enjoy and nurture. We, their 43 nieces and nephews, became their children. They attended our school concerts and sporting events. They treated us to special times—parties, ball games, trips. Grace baked and decorated our birthday cakes. They employed us to mow their yard, clean their house and work at Lugbill’s. They were always proud of us.
Lawrence and Grace did not have the opportunity to continue their education when they were growing up. Neither finished high school, but most of their nieces and nephews attended college. We’re pleased that they remembered Goshen College in this special way. They encouraged all of us to become what we wanted to be. Now they can help many more students to do the same.
Lawrence died in 1990 at the age of 72. Grace died in 1995 at age 74.
