Always a strong proponent of the church and of education, his wife thought it appropriate to remember Howard by leaving funds in his name for a scholarship at Goshen, a college that had meant so much to him. She leaves the scholarship open to any recipient but prefers priority be given to a student of biology or church history, Howard’s two main interests when he was at Goshen.
Elmer and Lydia (Hooley) Murray were born near Shipshewana, Indiana. Before their marriage in 1911, Elmer earned a one—year teaching certificate at Goshen College and taught at the Pleasant Valley School near Middlebury, Indiana.
“If I were going to design a ‘model’ community, I’d want to begin with a citizen like Dan Metzler,” wrote a columnist in the Nappanee Advance News in paying tribute to Dan, who died in November 1983. A quick review of Dan’s--and his wife Esther’s--contributions to their community and Goshen College gives ample evidence that this statement is true.
"Active" is an appropriate description of Steve Massanari’s years as a Goshen College student. By the time he graduated with a degree in communication in 1973, Steve was well-known and appreciated by fellow students for his ability in drama, sensitivity to others and overall good cheer.
Before her death in September 1977, Jill Liechty took action to ensure that the concerns nearest her heart would receive maximum benefit from her estate. Jill was 25 years old when she died, following a nine-month illness. Prior to her illness, she worked at Goshen College as an admissions counselor for two years.
As a great tribute to their memory, it is fitting and proper to combine their love of church and learning, and their unselfish service to others, by establishing a scholarship fund for needy students at Goshen College.
The Lehmans lived most of their lives in North Lima, Ohio. Edwin was 99 years old when he died in 1977 and Mary was 90 years old at the time of her death in 1970.
As a child Goldie dreamed of being a nurse and although she never had the opportunity to obtain a degree, she never gave up her interest in nursing. For a period of time she volunteered as a grey lady at the hospital. “This was a way for me to keep alive my interest in the field," she said.
In 1971 Goshen College received word that Mrs. LaBour had established a Trust to be available to Goshen College to provide scholarships for Nursing students; preference being given to needy students of high scholastic standing.
For his ninth birthday, Eric Kenagy’s only wish was for a potter’s wheel. He had begun working with clay at age 8 through a short series of classes each winter at the Corvallis Arts Center (Oregon).
