The goal/purpose of this lectureship is to foster and strengthen Goshen College's contribution to the life and witness of the church-in-the-world. As a church college, Goshen College exists as an expression of the church in the life of the world of culture.
Franklin N. Kornhaus of the class of 1900, now of Oakland, California, has established an endowment fund of twenty—five hundred dollars, to provide an annual scholarship of one hundred dollars or more to be awarded to a student of Goshen College for achievement and promise in the field of public speaking. The holder of the scholarship is chosen annually by the head of the Department of speech in consultation with the President of the College.
Austin E. "Dutch" Knowlton was the owner and Chairman of the Knowlton Construction Company, started in Bellefontaine, Ohio, in 1937. Mr. Knowlton was a graduate of Bellefontaine High School in Logan County, Ohio and The Ohio State University, class of 1931, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering.
One of the concerns of a private, church-related institution like Goshen College are the escalating costs of tuition and fees that have made it difficult to compete with publicly-supported universities for capable students.
Whether riding on horseback or delivering babies in chicken coops, Esther Smucker Hodel was one of the first women physicians in the Mennonite Church. The obstacles she overcame to attain her degree exemplified her strong spirit and will to serve God.
Lena Hartzler had a lifelong interest in all people but especially those who were ill. She took special training for nurse aid service and contributed many years of service as a nurse aid.
Charlotte was an admissions counselor at Goshen College when she was killed in a automobile accident November 8, 1985. She was 41. Her husband, Gerald R. “Tony” Hurst, survived the accident. The Hursts’ two sons, Michael, 21, and Benjamin, 17, were not with their parents at the time of the accident.
A scholarship of $100 will be awarded annually to a senior nursing student on the basis of interest in serving the church, need, and professional ability. Friends of Hazel Schrock (Mrs. John A.) Hostetler, R. H., a graduate of the La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing, have provided this memorial scholarship as a perpetual benefit to student nurses having a similar vision for service in the name of Christ.
The Ron Hoffman Scholarship Fund for athletics is to be established as a memorial to Ron Hoffman, a student at Goshen College in the late fifties, who was killed in a single—engine plane crash June 2, 1990.
Elsie Hire grew up in Elkhart and graduated from high school in 1914. She then enrolled in Goshen College in June and graduated with a first-grade teaching certificate in 1915.
