Galen C. Roose (1892-1955) and Grace I. (Slagle) Roose (1894-1955) valued education for themselves, their family and others. They made Nappanee, Indiana their home and raised their family there while serving many years in local schools and in the First Brethren Church.
Victor and Marie Stoltzfus, both 1956 graduates of Goshen College, first learned of a Goshen College international student who was in need of a sponsor when her mother lost her job. They helped her stay in college with a personal donation.
At sunrise, May 5, 1935, Charles W. Young and Mable Arvilla Miller were married in an unusual ceremony. They stood atop Hanging Rock, which projects over the Wabash River. Indian lore has it that maidens watched their sweethearts canoeing up the river from this rock—a lovely image.
C. Henry Smith was born on June 8, 1875 in Metamora, Illinois to John and Magdalene Schertz Smith. John and Magdalene's parents came to the United States from Alsace-Lorraine in the early 1830s.
She already knew since she was in elementary school that she wanted to become a teacher. This Scholarship is made in her honor to support and students wanting to enter the teaching profession.
Because of their life long service to the church and their interest in Christian higher education, Paul Yoder has decided to establish a fund to assist needy and worthy students to attend Goshen College.
She was also known to take rehabilitating persons into her home until they were able to care for themselves. Although a quiet person, Rosa was known as one who inspired others to reach their Christian goals in spite of horrible odds.
Leah C. Risser was born on August 19, 1905. She grew up on the family homestead in Pennsylvania where the counties of Lancaster, Lebanon, and Dauphin meet. After graduating from Goshen College in 1931, Leah began teaching at the Milton Hershey Boys’ School in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
S.W. Witmer was born in 1888 in Farmersville, Pennsylvania. He received a bachelor's degree from Goshen College in 1914, a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1915, and a Ph.D. degree in 1935 from Indiana University.
Three faculty members offered sustained and e leadership in the development of the Goshen College Department of Nursing. Orpah B. Mosemann, 1950—71; Verna Zimmerman, 1951—75; and Anna Mae Charles Fretz, 1952—75 together gave 69 years of Nursing service to Goshen College providing leadership in Nursing education in the Mennonite Church, in the state of Indiana and in the world.
