H. Harold and Dorothy Hartzler Scholarship Fund

H. Harold Hartzler (better known during his teaching years at Goshen College as H3 or Cubey) grew up in Belleville, Pa. He graduated from Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, in 1930. He received a Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 1934.

He came to GC in 1937 following two years of teaching at Elizabethtown College.  After teaching math and physics at GC for 20 years, he taught at Mankato State University, Mankato, Minn..  His health was so much better in that climate that he decided to remain.  He retired at age 68 after 20 years of teaching at Mankato State.

H. Harold was a committed Christian and spent much time relating science and Christian faith. For over 40 years he was an active member of The American Scientific Affiliation, an organization that attempted to correlate the facts of science with the Holy Scriptures. He was also a very faithful Gideon.

At Juniata H. Harold met Dorothy Baker, and they were married in 1933.  Dorothy was a teacher but because of responsibilities as a mother and homemaker taught only a few years.  She was a frequent hostess for their many friends.  She had a great interest in reading medical literature, having at one time considered pursuing the field of medicine.  She was pleased to have three nurses in the family:  a daughter, a daughter-in-law and a granddaughter.  All three graduated from the Goshen College nursing program.

This scholarship was established by their three children to honor their years of dedication and sacrifice to Goshen College.  The children also all graduated from Goshen College.  Harold E. is a research chemist at Miles Laboratory in Elkhart.  Theo (Mrs. Ed Yoder) was an obstetrical nurse for most of her 38-year career.  Jon received a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Montana and is presently farming in Welcome, Minn.

All three children value their liberal-arts education at Goshen College and by this scholarship wish to aid in making that possible for others.
