The Sam and Lillian Zook Yoder Amish Scholarship Fund
Sam Yoder was born to an Amish family in an Amish community in Central Kansas. He graduated from elementary school with an eighth grade education. He worked on the family farm throughout his teen years, was drafted into Civilian Public Service, (CPS), for four years during World War II. After the war he served two and one-half years in the Netherlands and Germany with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). Upon his return from Europe he enrolled at Goshen College, completed a teaching degree and taught in public school for nine years. Later, he completed a Master’s degree and a Doctorate at Indiana University. He joined the faculty at Goshen College and served there for 28 years. He is now retired and lives at Greencroft Retirement Community.
Lillian Zook Yoder was born to a Mennonite family in Wayne County, Ohio. She attended Goshen College and earned a degree in Home Economics. She taught in public schools for several years and one year at Bethany Christian High School. She was active in volunteer work for many years. The Yoders are parents of two sons. Both attended Goshen College.
The Yoders believe there are many Amish young people who are very capable and should have the opportunity to attend college. This scholarship is intended to encourage such students to pursue a degree in higher education.
