This scholarship is given in memory of Ethel Pearl Ingleright Pletcher Nusbaum. She was born on Christmas day in 1882 at North Liberty, Indiana and later moved with her family to South Bend, Indiana where she taught music in the public schools and directed the South Bend Junior Symphony Orchestra.
Holding a master’s degree in string pedagogy, Bettie taught part-time for several years in the Goshen public schools, where she sparked great enthusiasm for playing string instruments. She found it necessary to stop her public school work after learning of her illness, but still found energy to work extensively in music with the children of the College Mennonite Church.
Delores and Marvin are interested in making it possible for students to attend church schools and particularly wish to help students who choose to attend Goshen College to study the natural sciences or prepare for church ministry.
During their lives, Lawrence and Grace Nofziger shared generously of themselves and their resources with their family and community. Now after their deaths, their legacy of generosity continues on in this scholarship.
Byron first visited Goshen as an accountant for Filter Fabrics, then a Cleveland company which had purchased property in Goshen. He visited Goshen on several occasions and returned from his trips with remarks about Goshen College.
In memory of her first husband, Dorothy Nelson McFarland has established the Dr. D. Chester Nelson Scholarship Fund. Students from Kenya will receive top priority for this scholarship.
Always a strong proponent of the church and of education, his wife thought it appropriate to remember Howard by leaving funds in his name for a scholarship at Goshen, a college that had meant so much to him. She leaves the scholarship open to any recipient but prefers priority be given to a student of biology or church history, Howard’s two main interests when he was at Goshen.
Elmer and Lydia (Hooley) Murray were born near Shipshewana, Indiana. Before their marriage in 1911, Elmer earned a one—year teaching certificate at Goshen College and taught at the Pleasant Valley School near Middlebury, Indiana.
“If I were going to design a ‘model’ community, I’d want to begin with a citizen like Dan Metzler,” wrote a columnist in the Nappanee Advance News in paying tribute to Dan, who died in November 1983. A quick review of Dan’s--and his wife Esther’s--contributions to their community and Goshen College gives ample evidence that this statement is true.
"Active" is an appropriate description of Steve Massanari’s years as a Goshen College student. By the time he graduated with a degree in communication in 1973, Steve was well-known and appreciated by fellow students for his ability in drama, sensitivity to others and overall good cheer.
