Now semi—retired, Clarence and Mae Orendorff Imhoff operate a large grain farm with their son, John, near Roanoke, Illinois. They have been long—standing supporters of Goshen College over the years, making generous contributions not only for annual operations, but also for such special projects as the Umble Center and various music facilities.
Her outgoing personality and sense of humor were two qualities that made her an effective admissions counselor, Gerig said. “Both prospective students and their parents often noted the friendliness with which she welcomed them to the campus. There was always a lot of laughter, commotion and joy when she was around. No questions--she made things happen.”
Occasionally people in the teaching profession are accused of being out of touch with the “real world.” They spend so much time in their “ivory towers,” their critics declare, they lose sight of the practical, everyday considerations of most of us.
The physical education department has come a long way since Lloyd and Evelyn Hostetler attended Goshen College in the 1930s. At that time there wasn’t even a male faculty member to lead the men’s physical education classes, so a student was hired each year to take charge.
“My mother envisioned that all of her seven children would go to college,” remembers Mildred Hostetler Hartzler. “Higher education was not that common in those days in our Mennonite community in Kansas.”
Charles Hahn’s daughter, Mabel, remembers her father as a quiet hard-working man, endowed with a system of simple values that kept him out of the limelight. Instead, he devoted his energies to his work and the raising of his seven children.
The Florence Grieser Memorial Scholarship for nursing students was established in memory of Florence Grieser who graduated from Goshen College with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree.
Kay Bandelier Gorsline left the Goshen community soon after graduating from high school. Although she knew a few college students, she was not well acquainted with Goshen College or the Mennonite Church that supported it. Despite these beginnings, however, Mrs. Gorsline and the college have become “friends” in her later years, and many Goshen students will be the beneficiaries of this relationship in the years to come.
John David and Mary (Mart Brunk were a part of the re-awakening of the Mennonite Church at the turn of the century. Born in 1872 and 1875 respectively, they were in their prime years when the, concept of missions and education in the Mennonite Church began to develop.
When Viola Good was asked what she would like to share with young people, she said “Follow the light in the openings that appear along the line of your inner urgings. Sooner or later you’ll see how God is leading.”
