They say college is where you make lifelong friends. “The GC Gang of the ’50s” is a vivid example of this. Goshen College is the place where they forged their friendships, and now the six married couples are giving back to the institution that they’ve all grown to love.
Peter A. and Florence C. Friesen were missionaries serving in India under the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities from 1923 to 1941. Peter had served two terms on the mission field prior to 1923.
Education was very important to Mary. She attended Goshen College and received her education degree in 1953.
Her husband, Ira, established this scholarship in hopes that Goshen College and the broader Mennonite community would recognize these characteristics of the woman he loved. It is also his hope that it will encourage and inspire other young women who have a gift for writing, editing and encouraging others.
John J. and Pauline Clemens Fisher rooted their long and interesting lives at Goshen College. Influenced by the education they received as undergraduates and their subsequent experiences as part of Goshen’s faculty community, John (1926-2014) and Pauline (1926-2018) embraced the college motto “Culture for Service.”
Her daughter Roma was enrolled in the teacher education program at Goshen College at the same time, with mother and daughter often attending the same classes together.
In Northern Indiana the name Fidler is synonymous with sand, gravel and concrete. Goshen residents Lewis and Elizabeth Fidler started this successful business in 1946 partly by chance.
Rebecca (Becky) Beachy Felton was born in Hutchinson Kansas on May 12, 1953 and lived her early years in Yoder, a small town south of Hutchinson. She attended and graduated from Goshen College in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and took a job working at the Goshen location of Provident Bookstores, a religious book store chain.

Peter J Dyck was born in Lysanderhöh, Russia on Dec. 4, 1914 and died January 4, 2010 of cancer at the age of 95 at his residence in Scottdale, Pa. When Peter was a young child during a famine and typhoid epidemic in Russia, he was on the brink of death when a shipment of food relief from North American Mennonites saved his life.
