When Edith Witmer came to Goshen College in the fall of 1926 she was not yet 24 years old; but she was well qualified to develop the Department of Home Economics. She had her B.S. in Home Economics from Penn State College, experience as a high school teacher, and a master’s degree from Columbia University in Home Economics Education.
Although T. Scott was never able to realize his dreams, it is the hope of his parents, James and Sharon Lee, brother Trevor and sisters Sherilee and Cindylee, that the recipients of this scholarship will take this opportunity to pursue theirs.
Alice Marie Sutter was born May 19, 1927, at Hopedale, Illinois, to Lee Sutter and Alma Nafziger Sutter. She was the eighth of 11 children, seven daughters and four sons.
The late Dr. Maurice L. Weldy practiced veterinary medicine for 40 years in the Wakarusa, Indiana, area and established himself as a large-animal surgeon, bovine sterility expert, speaker and seminar leader. As an alumnus and longtime supporter of Goshen College, M. L. Weldy wanted to help students interested in science attend Goshen College.
The Weaver’s children value their liberal arts education from Goshen and through this scholarship wish to honor their parents lifelong interests and help make a similar educational experience possible for others.
Amy Vanlaningham was a nursing student at Goshen College and a doer, in every sense of the word. In keeping with her spirit, her family established a nursing scholarship in her memory to assist those who likewise choose to become nurses.
Ann Rieth Van Dyke was born July 3, 1954, in South Bend, Indiana, the eldest of two children of Blair and Martha Rieth. She grew up in Goshen, attended Parkside Elementary School, St. Coletta School near Madison, Wisconsin, and Milwaukee Area Technical College.
“We need to get involved in supporting our Mennonite church schools so that our students will not be forced to attend state universities just because of cost.” That is the strong sentiment of Everett and Naomi Ulrich of Manson, Iowa, who have established a scholarship fund at Goshen College as their way of getting involved.
Although his primary interest has always been music, John Thut graduated from CC in 1923 with a degree in biology. He said it was not fully “acceptable” at that time to pursue music as a career.
Goshen College enjoys the generous financial support of many persons, but only one family has adopted an entire department. Ed and Mary Swartzendruber of New Paris, Ind., have been loyal patrons of the music department for nearly a decade.
