Multifactor Authentication – Employees and Other Account Holders

Goshen College employees, and other account holders, will use multifactor authentication (MFA) when signing into their GC account. The product that we are using to facilitate your MFA is called Okta. You will use a MFA application on your cell phone to add a second layer of security to your GC account, which will keep your account secure even if your password is compromised. Below are the setup instructions.

You will need access to both a computer and the device that you want to use for your  MFA in order to complete the below instructions.

You have the option to use either the Okta Verify app (preferred) or the Google Authenticator app. With Okta verify, you tap a verification prompt on your device to provide MFA. With Google Authenticator you receive a code in the Google Authenticator app that you need to type in to provide MFA.

Note: If you don’t have the type of cell phone that can have apps installed, you can have SMS texts or voice calls with authentication codes sent to your cell phone.
Employees can also have the authentication codes sent to their office phone extension by way of a phone call.
Employees can also use a USB security key (called a Yubikey) that get pluggs into the USB port of their Goshen College computer.

STEP 1: Sign into Okta

  1. On a computer, go to https://login.goshen.edu
  2. Enter in your GC username and click Next.
  3. Enter in your GC password and click Verify.

STEP 2: Select your authentication method

  1. On the computer screen, click the Set up button for either Okta Verify or Google Authenticator.
  2. You may be prompted to enter in your GC username and/or your GC password.

STEP 3: Install the app on your phone or device

Okta Verify Installation Instructions:

  1. Open the App Store on your iPhone, or the Google Play store on your Android phone.
  2. Search for “Okta Verify.” Make sure the app icon looks like this:

 Google Authenticator Installation Instructions:  

  1. Open the App Store on your iPhone, or the Google Play store on your Android phone.
  2. Search for “Google Authenticator.” Make sure the app icon looks like this:

STEP 4: Register your device with Okta

If using Okta Verify: 

    1. Open the Okta Verify app that you installed on your phone/device.
    2. Tap the Get Started button.
    3. Tap Next.
    4. Tap Add Account.
    5. Tap Organization
    6. Tap Yes, Ready to Scan.
    7. Tap OK to allow access to your camera.
    8. Point your device’s camera to the QR code that is displayed on the Set Up Okta Verify screen on your computer.
    9. Tap Allow to allow push notifications.
    10. Tap Allow to allow notifications to be sent to your device.
    11. If you wish to enable face ID so that you can use Okta Verify with facial recognition, tap Enable. Otherwise, tap Not Now.
    12. Tap Done.
    13. On the computer screen, if you want to set up additional methods, such as another app, phone, or biometrics, to ensure you can still access your account if one method becomes unavailable, click the Set Up button for that method. Once finished setting up your methods, click “Set up later button to be taken to the Okta Dashboard.
      You can come back to the Okta Dashboard any time to set up additional methods by signing in at https://login.goshen.edu. And then click your name in the upper right, click on Settings, and then scroll down to “Security Methods” and choose another method to set up.
    14. You are now ready to use Okta Verify to provide MFA when signing into your GC account and services.

If using Google Authenticator:

    1. Open the Google Authenticator app that you installed on your phone/device.
    2. Tap the + icon.
    3. Select Scan a QR Code.
    4. Point your device camera to the QR code that is displayed on the Set Up Google Authenticator screen on your computer.
    5. On the computer, click Next.
    6. Enter in the code that is displayed in the Google Authenticator app for “login.goshen.edu”
      You may now close the Google Authenticator app on your device.
    7. On the computer screen, if you want to set up additional methods, such as another app, phone, or biometrics, to ensure you can still access your account if one method becomes unavailable, click the Set Up button for that method. Once finished setting up your methods, click “Set up later button to be taken to the Okta Dashboard.

    8. You are now ready to use Google Authenticator to provide MFA when signing into your GC account and services.

How to use the Okta Verify App or the Google Authenticator App for Multifactor Authentication

Okta Verify – After completing STEPS 1-4 above:

  1. Sign into your GC account, or any GC service that uses your GC username and password.
  2. Tap the prompt that appears on your device.
  3. Tap Yes, It’s Me.  If you’re not trying to log in and you receive a prompt, tap No, It’s Not Me.

Google Authenticator – After completing STEPS 1-4 above:

  1. Sign into your GC account, or any GC service that uses your GC username and password.
  2. When prompted, open the Google Authenticator app on your device and enter in the code that is displayed for “login.goshen.edu”
  3. Click Verify.
