Power on/of OR in/out of sleep mode
There is a black rectangular button located on the top of the iPad on the right. This on/off button has many uses. If the iPad is powered off, this button can be pressed and released to power on the device. If the iPad is in sleep mode, this button can be pressed and released to wake up the device. If the iPad is on and you wish you put it in sleep mode, press and release the on/off button. The screen will go black and the iPad is now in sleep mode. The final function of this button is to power off the device. To power off the device, press and hold the on/off button. To confirm your decision to shut down, a red arrow with the text “slide to power off” will appear on the top of the screen and you should select and slide that red arrow to the right to power off the iPad. It is normal to not fully power down the device as it uses very little power when in sleep mode.
Unlock the Device
The iPad will display a lock screen when it is powered on or when it is woken up from sleep mode. The lock screen will have a gray arrow with the text “slide to unlock” at the bottom of the screen. To unlock the device, select and slide the gray arrow to the right and the home screen will appear.
Navigation through Apps
The iPads are equipped with a variety of applications, also referred to as apps. When you receive the iPad, the apps are sorted into folders. To open an app, simply tap to click on the desired app. To look in the folders, tap to click on the folder you wish you browse. It will open and display the apps in that folder. To open an app from that folder, select the app. If you didn’t find what you were looking for, tap on the home screen above or below the black area to exit the folder. There is only one page of apps when you receivet the iPad. However, if you download an app, you may need to scroll to the next home page to find it. To do this, take one finger and swipe on the screen from right to left and it will change home pages. To go back to the original home page, swipe from left to right.
Exiting Apps
If you are in an application and wish to exit, simply press the home button, located on the bottom in the center of the iPad (directly under the screen). It is an actual button, not something on the touch screen.
Battery Life
The remaining battery life is displayed on the top right hand corner of the screen. A small battery is displayed with the percent of battery life remaining. If the battery is 20% or below, it will alert you so you know to connect and charge the device.
Volume Control
To control the volume on the iPad, there is a rectangular black button on the right side of the device. The top of the button turns the volume up and the bottom turns the volume down.
Locking Screen Orientation
Above the volume control button, there is a small black switch. It can be moved up and down. This switch will either lock or unlock screen orientation. If the orientation is unlocked, the button will be slid towards the top and the screen will rotate automatically when you rotate the iPad. If the orientation is locked, the button will be slid down towards the bottom and you will see a small but bright orange dot to signify it is locked. When locked, the screen will stay in the orientation it is in when you lock it, no matter how you rotate the iPad.
Using the Keyboard
The keyboard from the iPad bag should be synced with the iPad when it is checked out. However, sometimes you have to re-sync it. Before you go through that process, there are some things to check if the keyboard is not functioning. First, be sure the keyboard is switched on. The on/off switch is on the top left on the front of the keyboard. For the keyboard to be on, the switch should be pushed to the right. To the left of the on/off switch, there is a green battery light that will come on to signify the keyboard is powered on. If this light does not come on, and the switch is in the correct position, the batteries may be dead. If the light is on and the keyboard is still not working, or if you had to switch the batteries, you will need to re-sync the keyboard by following these instructions:
- On iPad, go to: Settings-> General-> Bluetooth and make sure the Bluetooth is set to “on.”
- Turn on the keyboard (switch is on the top right of the front of the keyboard).
- Turn the keyboard over so the keys are facing down. On the top left, there is a small button that says connect beside it: press the button.
- On the iPad, tap the Logitech Tablet Keyboard that appears under devices. This will give you a PIN code to enter on the keyboard to sync the devices.
- To make sure it is synced, open the “notes” application and type a few letters. Be sure to delete this text when you know it works.
When you are finished using the keyboard, be sure to turn it off so the batteries do not die. You should not have to re-sync the keyboard after it is powered off and back on.
Downloading Apps
The iPads are equipped with a number of apps for a variety of tools. However, if you need an app that is not on the iPad, you can download an app from the app store. You will need to have an Apple ID account because some apps are not free. We are not able to support app purchases outside of what we have equipped the iPads with. If you already have an account, or you wish to create an account, you can do so by going to Settings-> Store (found on the lower left hand side) ->Sign In. Once you have selected Sign In, a box will appear on the screen asking if you would like to sign in to an existing account or create an account. Select the appropriate choice and follow the steps it provides.
Connecting to WiFi
The iPad should be connected to the “gc” network when you receive it. However, it may need your Goshen username and password for authentication. Or, if the iPad is taken off campus, you may need to reconnect to the internet when you return. To connect to WiFi, you will need to go to Settings-> Wi-Fi (on the upper left). Once you selected Wi-Fi, it will display available networks. If you are on campus, you should connect to the “gc” network. To do this, select the “gc” network. It will join the network. A dialogue box may pop up asking for your username and password. Here is where you will need to put in your Goshen username and password to authenticate and connect to the internet. If the connection was successful, a check will appear to the left of the network name. If you are off campus and wish to use the internet, you can find the available networks in the same way and select the one to which you wish to connect. However, be sure you are connecting to a familiar network.
Organizing and/or deleting apps
When you receive the iPad, there are a few apps on the home screen and the rest are sorted into folders. If you download an app or would like to move a commonly used app to a different location, you may do so. To move an app, you need to select and HOLD on an app (if the app opens the program, you need to return to the home screen and hold down on the app). After a few seconds, the apps will appear to be slightly shaking. Once they are shaking, you may release the app you were pressing on. To move an app, press and hold on the app. Then, slide your finger, while still holding down on the app, and drag it to the desired location. Once you have the apps where you would like them, press the home button. This will make the apps stop shaking and then you may continue to use the iPad.
To delete an app, you follow similar steps. However, be aware, if you delete an app and do not have an Apple ID account, you will not be able to put the app back on the iPad. To delete an app, press and hold down on the app. The apps will begin shaking, as they did when moving apps. To delete an app, press the “x” in the top left corner of the desired app. It will ask you to confirm and then it will remove this program from the iPad.
How to find the iPad user guide
On the each iPad, there is an iPad User Guide in the iBooks app. This has a variety of tips and directions for using the iPad. To get to this iBook, you will need to click on “Books” on the home page and a sub-folder will open different book apps. Click on the iBooks app. Once it is done loading, there will be a “book” on the shelf titled “iPad User Guide.” Select that and it will load the book of tips and directions for using the iPad. From there, navigation is a simple as swiping to the left or right.
