Literacy I
How do people learn to read and write? What are patterns that seem to be consistent in oral and written language, expressive and receptive forms of language? How do children learn to speak in a home context? How do we teach children to read and write in a school setting? What does research tell us about effectiveness of methods for maximum student learning? How do we teach 25 children at once who all learn differently–what forms of differentiation are most effective? These are the sorts of questions we work with in Literacy I. This course also includes a field placement so each person in the class is teaching a small group of students in the public schools.
Literacy II
What happens when people don’t learn to read and write? What does the research say about effective interventions? How do I differentiate for different issues different children may be encountering? While in this course, each class member tutors a child who is struggling to learn to read and/or write.
Children’s and Adolescent Literature
This is a survey course of literature for young children through young adults. We do voracious amounts of reading of literature by genre and apply different methods of critical theory and review. It is a course of immersing yourself in the literature, discussing and analyzing what you read. While it is a lot of reading, it may well be the most enjoyable reading you will do in your academic career. You will also get a chance to try your hand at book writing and making.
Supervision of Elementary Student Teachers
In the senior year all candidates teach in a classroom setting for a semester under the supervision of a classroom teacher and a faculty member.
Senior Seminar
Following student teaching we all gather for a 3 week course to revisit educational theory and practice, to prepare for licensure, interviews, and how to synthesize all that has happened in your teaching career.
