Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College will host its annual women’s spirituality retreat, Friday, Feb. 26, 7 p.m. through Saturday, Feb. 27, 2 p.m. This overnight event invites women of all ages to tend their spiritual lives through invigorating input, time with other women, time outdoors and time alone.
The 2016 theme is, “A Way in the Wilderness.” Presenters are Jackie Wyse Rhodes, assistant professor of religion at Bluffton University, Bluffton, Ohio; Kate Lichti, chaplain at the Fluvanna Women’s Correctional Center and Janie Beck Kreider, director of communications for Mennonite Church USA.
Wyse Rhodes will examine the lives of biblical women who spent time in the wilderness. She will reflect on what sustained Miriam, Hagar and other women of faith on their journeys through the wilderness and where we too can find God in dry and desert places. A night hike will follow.
On Saturday, Lichti and Beck Kreider will guide the group in a morning of contemplative prayer and silence framed by the stories and sayings of the Desert Mothers, a group of Christian ascetics who lived in the deserts of Egypt in the 4th and 5th centuries.
The cost is $50, which includes lodging and two meals on Saturday. Lodging is in a dorm setting with two to four people per room. Please register by Tuesday, Feb. 23. Pay by credit card over the phone or by check the evening of the retreat. To register, email janiebk@goshen.edu or call 260-799-5869.
