Community School of the Arts youth choirs to perform in spring showcase concert

Three Community School of the Arts youth choirs with students in grades 3-12 will perform in the spring CSA showcase concert on Sunday, May 1 at 4 p.m. The concert will be held in Sauder Concert Hall in the Goshen College Music Center.

Performing will be Rejoice (grades 3-5), directed by Kristin Kauffman; Shout for Joy (grades 6-8), directed by Sandy Hill; and Sommo Voci (grades 9-12), directed by Marcia Yost.

The three choirs will perform as individual choruses, and will also combine to perform “Stars I Shall Find” by Victor C. Johnson. The combined choir will be conducted by Kristin Kauffman.

Tickets are $7 adults, $5 seniors/students, available online at goshen.edu/tickets or by calling (574) 535-7566. Goshen College faculty/staff/students are admitted free with ID, as well as CSA students and their immediate family members. Tickets will also be available at the door.

 

OPEN AUDITIONS FOR THE 2016-17 CHOIRS will take place in May and August at the Goshen College Music Center. All singers in rising grades 3-12 are eligible to participate. No prior singing experience is necessary.

Registration and tuition payment through the Community School of the Arts is required.

 

Kristin Kauffman is a graduate of Goshen College with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. She served as choral director at Central Noble High School and Central Noble Middle School in Albion (Ind.) from 2000-2004 where she also provided private voice instruction and taught courses in music theory and musical theater. She has privately taught students throughout Elkhart and St. Joseph counties and currently teaches voice at Fairfield Junior/Senior High School. Kauffman is an adjudicator with the Indiana State School Music Association, a guest song leader for area retreats and conferences, and a Soprano soloist. She is an active member of Belmont Mennonite Church in Elkhart (Ind.) where she directs the Hosanna Children’s Choir. This is Kristin’s fourth season as director of the Rejoice Children’s Choir.

Sandy Hill is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a master of music degree in vocal performance. She has performed various roles in musical theater productions, including Julie Jordan in Carousel, Sister Mary Amnesia in Nunsense and Patience in Patience, for which she was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress by the Austin Circle of Theatres. Sandy also directed the Wausau (Wisconsin) Conservatory Choraliers children’s choir, who performed at the White House. She was selected as a National Association of Singers (NATS) intern at Penn State University in 1997. She has taught vocal instruction at various schools in the Goshen community since moving here with her family in 2000, including Goshen High School, Northridge High School and Bethany Christian Schools. Sandy has directed Shout for Joy since 2008.

Marcia Yost is in her 33rd year of directing choral music at Goshen High School and her 38th year of teaching music in Elkhart County. In her tenure of teaching at Goshen, her choirs and the Crimsonaires have garnered championships in New York City, Atlanta, Toronto, Washington, D.C. and Montreal. Goshen High School Choirs hold numerous Indiana state titles, including 1995, 1997 and 2010 state champions and 1999, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009 state runner-up. The GHS choral program is one of the mostly highly awarded choral programs in the State of Indiana. Yost holds a bachelor of music degree from the University of Indianapolis and a masters of music degree from Western Michigan University in music education and music history. Marcia is also the Executive Director of the Music Center at Goshen College where she works at supporting the reputation of excellence as well as bringing continued vision to music education in Elkhart County and beyond.
