Beverly Lapp, Goshen College professor of music, will present an Advent and Christmas music concert on Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. in the Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall in collaboration with colleagues from the music department and Community School of the Arts.
Goshen College Professor Emeritus of History James (Jim) R. Hertzler, 82, died Nov. 18 at his Goshen home after an extended illness. He taught at Goshen College for 33 years, from 1966 until retiring in 1999.
A conference minister reflecting on a congregation’s search committee process where a number of potentially good pastors were passed over blurted out to me, “I would like to tell them ‘pastors don’t grow on trees!’” I laughed, but later it got me to thinking of where pastors do grow.

Emily Rodgers studied English at Goshen College. Other than a show on campus and a few solo gigs performing cover songs at The Electric Brew in Goshen and The Daily Grind in Elkhart, there is scant evidence of the musical career path Rodgers would embark on.
In addition to finding a path back to God in Goshen, Hedrick also developed a fondness for the American Midwest. So after the 25-year-old Pennsylvania native finished her graduate work at the Wake Forest University School of Divinity, walking away with a Master’s of Divinity degree and a calling to the ministry, she decided that she wanted to return to the Midwest.
Beginning Nov. 21 (the Monday prior to the first Sunday in Advent) and culminating on Christmas Day, Goshen College students, faculty and staff will provide weekday reflections based on lectionary Scripture passages and the Advent theme: “The Holy Way: Walking in the Way of God’s Heart.”
Goshen College’s All-Campus Band and Lavender Jazz ensemble will perform in a joint concert on Friday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m in Goshen College Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall.
Perhaps the greatest gift we can hope to give to all future graduates is the profound experience of belonging to each other, no matter our color, class, creed or culture. Together, we are Goshen College, past, present and future.
