When Marlette Gomez graduated from Goshen College in 2013 with a degree in social work, she knew she wanted to focus her career on giving back to the immigrant or Latino communities. She now works as the college prep coach at Goshen High School, helping first-generation students make their college dreams a reality.
Reena Ramos '18 worked as a land management intern for ACRES Land Trust, working with a botanist to inventory plants in Spring Lake woods and bog near Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
Officials overseeing endowments at some of Indiana’s smaller colleges and universities have cut back on spending, or are considering doing so, after struggling to grow the size of their funds over the past decade.
Goshen College faculty, staff and student women will perform stories about friendship, sexuality, body image, trauma and triumph in the fourth annual Goshen Monologues on Saturday, March 11, 2017. The performance will take place at 7 p.m. in the Goshen College Church-Chapel and is free and open to the public.
Yazan Meqbil, a sophomore molecular biology/biochemistry major from Hebron, Palestine, won the top prize of $500 at the annual C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest with his speech titled “Beyond Occupation of Mind and Body.” His speech will also be entered in Mennonite Central Committee’s bi-national intercollegiate oratorical contest.
Mennonite leaders will pick up the work of the Minority Ministries Council from the 1960s and 1970s during a conference titled “Black, Brown, and Mennonite: Lessons from the Chicano, Puerto Rican, and Black Freedom Movements for the Mennonite Church,” March 30 through April 1, 2017.
A group of 45 students from four colleges gathered Feb. 18-19 at Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College for the fourth annual Sustainability Summit.
Beginning March 1 (Ash Wednesday) and culminating on April 16 (Easter), Goshen College students, faculty and staff will provide weekday reflections based on the upcoming Sunday’s lectionary Scripture passages, available online at www.goshen.edu/devotions, or by subscribing to the daily email. Many writers will reflect on the theme: “Restore us, O God!” taken from Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Church Canada worship resources.
The documentary, “Admit One: The Story of the Goshen Theater,” was directed by Riley Bean-Mills, a junior communication major from Milltown, Indiana, in conjunction with Goshen College’s film production company, FiveCore Media. The 26-minute documentary explores the rich history of the Goshen Theater and the tremendous task currently underway to restore and revive it.
