Goshen College’s top scholarship recipients named for 2019-20

Goshen College has announced the 33 recipients of the school’s 2019-20 top scholarships for incoming first-year students.

Eight college-bound students are being offered the President’s Leadership Award (PLA), which is the college’s top merit scholarship. The PLA is given in recognition of outstanding academic performance and promise in potential leadership. The award is a full-tuition scholarship (worth $34,540 in 2019-20), renewable for eight semesters based on academic performance.

The 2019 PLA selections, who will receive the scholarship upon enrollment at Goshen College, are:

  • Wesley Beck, of Goshen, Indiana, will graduate from Goshen High School. He plans to study chemistry.
  • Grace Hitt, of Cincinnati, Ohio, will graduate from Wyoming High School. She plans to study history.
  • Lydia Holsopple, of Millersburg, Indiana, will graduate from Fairfield Junior-Senior High School. She plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
  • Jonah King, of Normal, Illinois, will graduate from University High School. He plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
  • Eliza Lehman, of Cincinnati, Ohio, will graduate from Clark Montessori High School. She plans to study history.
  • Alena Miller, of Huntington, Indiana, will graduate from Huntington North High School. She plans to study Spanish.
  • Elizabeth Nalliah, of Huntington, Indiana, will graduate from Huntington North High School. She plans to study biology.
  • Samuel Stoner-Eby, of Kigali, Rwanda, will graduate from Kigali International Community School. He plans to study history.

 

Ten students are being offered the Intercultural Leader Award. The Intercultural Leadership Award is for incoming first-generation students of color who have demonstrated a distinguished academic record and leadership potential. The scholarship is for up to $80,000 total ($20,000 per year), and is renewable for a total of eight consecutive semesters based on academic performance and program participation.

The students who will receive the Intercultural Leader Awards upon enrollment at Goshen College are:

  • Thalia Alvarez, of Warsaw, Indiana, will graduate from Warsaw Community High School. She plans to study social work.
  • Katherine Avilez-Rodas, of Goshen, Indiana, will graduate from Goshen High School. She plans to study nursing.
  • Yesenia Becerra, of Elkhart, Indiana, will graduate from Elkhart Central High School. She plans to study business.
  • Gissel Campos, of Ligonier, Indiana, will graduate from West Noble High School. She plans to study nursing.
  • Kiana Green, of Richmond, Virginia, will graduate from Henrico High School. She plans to study elementary education.
  • Brandon Jimenez, of Wellman, Iowa, will graduate from Iowa Mennonite School. He plans to study peace, justice and conflict studies.
  • Jared Juarez Salgado, of Goshen, Indiana, will graduate from Goshen High School. He plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
  • April Parra, of Elkhart, Indiana, will graduate from Elkhart Central High School. She plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
  • Karla Rico, of Elkhart, Indiana, will graduate from Elkhart Memorial High School. She plans to study nursing.
  • Daniela Troya Castro, of Goshen, Indiana, will graduate from Goshen High School. She plans to study biology.

 

In addition, 15 high school seniors are being offered the Leader of Color Award, which is awarded to students of color who have demonstrated a distinguished academic record and leadership potential. The Leader of Color Award is worth $20,000 total ($5,000 per year), and is renewable for a total of eight consecutive semesters based on academic performance and program participation.

The students who will receive the Leader of Color Award upon enrollment at Goshen College are:

  • Dakota Cain, of Carmel, Indiana, will graduate from Westfield High School. She plans to study environmental and marine science.
  • Angela Calvillo, of Elkhart, Indiana, will graduate from Concord High School. She plans to study biology.
  • Jadon Davis, of Baltimore, Maryland, will graduate from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. He plans to study exercise science.
  • Joise Favila-Castillo, of Goshen, Indiana, will graduate from Goshen High School. She plans to study nursing.
  • Alexandria Flores, of Goshen, Indiana, will graduate from Goshen High School. She plans to study film production.
  • Zaineb Galeb, of Goshen, Indiana, will graduate from Goshen High School. She plans to study biology.
  • Katia Gutierrez Avila, of Goshen, Indiana, will graduate from Goshen High School. She plans to molecular biology/biochemistry.
  • Virginia Jimenez, of Ligonier, Indiana, will graduate from West Noble High School. She plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
  • Tommy Nguyen, of Goshen, Indiana, will graduate from Bethany Christian High School. He plans to study computer science.
  • Natalia Ramirez, of Goshen, Indiana, will graduate from Concord High School. She plans to study psychology.
  • Ila Roberts, of Indianapolis, Indiana, will graduate from Pike High School. She plans to study public relations.
  • Karen Rodriguez Romo, of Goshen, Indiana, will graduate from Goshen High School. She plans to study nursing.
  • Javon Thomas, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, will graduate from Lancaster Mennonite High School. He plans to study education.
  • Jose Torres, of Elkhart, Indiana, will graduate from Bethany Christian High School. He plans to study chemistry.
  • Diego Torres, of Goshen, Indiana, will graduate from Goshen High School. He plans to study education.
