GC to offer continuing education classes in Apple’s Swift programming language

Goshen College will begin offering a new class this fall for adult and continuing education students focusing on Apple’s Swift programming language.

Knowledge of Apple’s Swift programming language opens up a wide range of career options in a rapidly mobilizing digital landscape. During Goshen College’s intensive two month course, students will learn, explore and demonstrate how to use the fundamental building blocks of Swift, earning a digital certification and badge which can be included on a resume, portfolio, email or shared on social media.

The convenient two-month course is designed to build a firm understanding of IOS and OSX development, the fundamental building blocks of Swift. This class is valuable for both experienced programmers and complete beginners.

Classes meet once per week on Thursday evenings, between Sept. 19 and Nov. 21, and costs $550 per student. Students can register online at goshen.edu/swift.

According to Apple, the Swift programming language has quickly become one of the fastest growing languages, using easy-to-write software that is incredibly fast and safe by design. For students, learning Swift is a great introduction to modern programming concepts and best practices.

A 2019 eMarketer study showed that the average adult in the United States spend nearly three hours on their smartphones every day, with 90 percent of that time being spent within apps; in 2017, CNN Money ranked mobile app developer as the number one job in the United States due to its high pay and strong predicted job growth.

Regardless of your career, learning to code is a valuable asset in today’s job market. Goshen College’s Swift course is dedicated to providing students with a hands-on introduction to the language and its applications, as well as practice thinking through complex problems in a supportive environment.
