Top scholarship recipients named for 2021-22
Goshen College has announced finalists and recipients of the school’s 2021-22 top scholarships for incoming first-year students.
Two college-bound students were awarded the President’s Leadership Award (PLA), which is the college’s top merit scholarship. The President’s Leadership Award is a competitive scholarship for high-achieving academic students who demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities. Recipients will receive a full tuition scholarship renewable for a total of eight semesters.
To be eligible to apply for the PLA, students must meet one of the following criteria: Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.85 (on a 4.0 scale); score at least 1340 on the SAT or at least 29 on the ACT; or be a National Merit Semifinalist.
The 2021 President’s Leadership Award recipients are:
- Madeline Bollinger, of Lenexa, Kansas, will graduate from Shawnee Mission West High School, and plans to study music education.
- Kayla Kauffman, of Hanover, Pennsylvania, will graduate from Hanover Senior High School, and plans to study Deaf studies.
The following students were named as finalists for the PLA scholarship:
- Allison Velie, of Goshen, will graduate from Concord High School. Velie plans to study biology.
- Orlando Aguirre-Mulato, of Shelbyville, Indiana, will graduate from Shelbyville High School. Aguirre-Mulato plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
- Mila Baumgartner, of Chicago, Illinois, will graduate from Uptown Christian School. Baumgartner plans to study peace, justice and conflict studies.
- Meredith Blossom, of Wellman, Iowa, will graduate from Hillcrest Academy. Blossom plans to study journalism.
- Isaac Bontrager, of Goshen, will graduate from Northridge High School. Bontrager plans to study music.
- Emme Boots, of Bluffton, Indiana, will graduate from Bluffton High School. Boots plans to study exercise science.
- Ashley Christison, of San Diego, California, will graduate from Rancho Bernardo High School. Christison plans to study environmental and marine science.
- Collin Echols, of Indianapolis, Indiana, will graduate from Warren Central High School. Echols plans to study broadcasting.
- Ainsley Friesen, of Elkhart, Indiana, will graduate from Goshen High School. Friesen plans to study history.
- Emma Gingerich, of Elkhart, Indiana, will graduate from Concord High School. Gingerich plans to study history.
- Charlotte Hedberg, of Bloomington, Illinois, is a homeschooled student. Hedberg plans to study art.
- Julia Hitt, of Cincinnati, Ohio, will graduate from Wyoming High School. Hitt plans to study biology.
- Tate Ivanyo, of Valparaiso, Indiana, will graduate from Morgan Township School. Ivanyo plans to study biology.
- Rebecca Janovsky, of Joliet, Illinois, will graduate from Joliet Township High School West. Janovsky plans to study chemistry.

- Meredith Lehman, of Dover, Ohio, will graduate from Dover High School. Lehman plans to study biology.
- Johanna Morford-Oberst, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, will graduate from Albuquerque High School. Morford-Oberst plans to study environmental and marine science.
- Joseph Mounsithiraj, of Goshen, will graduate from Bethany Christian High School. Mounsithiraj plans to study engineering physics.
- Emma Nord, of Greenville, Illinois, will graduate from Greenville High School. Nord plans to study secondary education.
- Miri Olivares, of Elkhart, Indiana, will graduate from Elkhart Memorial High School. Olivares plans to study criminal justice and restorative justice.
- Louis Ricou, of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, is a homeschooled student. Ricou plans to study environmental and marine science.
- Theo Siemens-Rhodes, of Goshen, will graduate from Bethany Christian High School. Siemens-Rhodes plans to study engineering physics.
- Cydney Stables, of Amity, Oregon, will graduate from Amity High School. Stables plans to study environmental and marine science.
- Jalyn Sneary, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, will graduate from Harrisonburg High School. Sneary plans to study elementary education.
- Matthew Snyder, of Goshen, will graduate from Goshen High School. Snyder plans to study sociology.
- Neda Stancheva, of Osceola, Indiana, will graduate from Penn High School. Stancheva plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
- Emily Strzelecki, of South Bend, Indiana, will graduate from South Bend Career Academy. Strzelecki plans to study TESOL.
- Christina Troyer, of Oakwood Village, Ohio, will graduate from Bedford High School. Troyer plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
- Emily Veenstra, of Joliet, Illinois, will graduate from Metea Valley High School. Veenstra plans to study sign language interpreting.
- Elsa Waidelich, of Rockingham, Virginia, will graduate from Turner Ashby High School. Waidelich plans to study environmental and marine science.
- Evie Weaver, of Mishawaka, Indiana, will graduate from Penn High School. Weaver plans to study biology.
- Ally Welty Peachey, of Champaign, Illinois, will graduate from Champaign Central High School. Welty Peachey plans to study biology.
- Amelia Witmer-Rich, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, will graduate from Kenston High School. Witmer-Rich plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
- Phil Witmer-Rich, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, will graduate from Kenston High School. Witmer-Rich plans to study English.
- Aidan Yoder, of Kalona, Iowa, will graduate from Hillcrest Academy. Yoder plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
- Ana Yoder, of Elkhart, Indiana, will graduate from Bethany Christian High School. Yoder plans to study biology.
- Tinsley Yoder, of Goshen, will graduate from Bethany Christian High School. Yoder plans to study nursing.
- Meiling Yordy, of Goshen, will graduate from Goshen High School. Yordy plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
Intercultural Leadership Award
Ten students have been awarded the Intercultural Leadership Award. The Intercultural Leadership Award is for incoming first-generation students of color who have demonstrated a distinguished academic record, leadership potential and commitment to giving back to their community. The scholarship is for $20,000 a year and is renewable for a total of eight consecutive semesters based on academic performance and program participation.
In order to qualify to apply, students must meet the following criteria: Be of African-, Hispanic/Latino-, Asian- or Native-American heritage; be a first-generation college applicant; be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card; have a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale); and score at least 970 on the SAT OR at least 18 on the ACT.
The 2021 Intercultural Leadership Award recipients are:
- Hadel Alammari, of Topeka, Indiana, will graduate from Westview High School. Alammari plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
- Jaelyn Amhdar, of Richmond, Indiana, will graduate from Richmond High School. Amhdar plans to study exercise science.
- Jocsan Barahona Rosales, of Goshen, will graduate from Goshen High School. Barahona Rosales plans to study music.
- Jeremiah Chico, of Goshen, will graduate from Goshen High School. Chico plans to study music.
- Andy Gonzalez, of South Bend, Indiana, will graduate from Marian High School. Gonzalez plans to study exercise science.
- Areli Guzman, of Goshen, will graduate from Goshen High School. Guzman plans to study nursing.
- Alex Patino, of Elkhart, Indiana, will graduate from Elkhart Memorial High School. Patino plans to study engineering physics.
