Goshen College announces new Master of Arts in Teaching

Goshen College has announced the approval of a new Master of Arts in Teaching program by the Education and Deaf Studies Department, and will begin admitting students for the fall of 2025. This program is designed to address the need for qualified educators in the United States, particularly in Indiana, where teacher shortages have reached alarming levels.

“Moving to an entry-level masters for teachers fits well with the qualifications of students in this area and the expertise of our faculty,” said Dr. Ann Vendrely, vice president for academic affairs and academic dean. “The program will meet the needs of local school districts and provide students with the knowledge they need to succeed.”

The M.A.T. program, spearheaded by Dr. Suzanne Ehst, associate academic dean and director of graduate teacher education programs, aims to elevate post-baccalaureate education to the master’s level. It will offer three distinct pathways to licensure and advanced teaching credentials, catering to the diverse needs of aspiring educators.

“Education professors at Goshen College have always been intentional about blending research and scholarship with practical classroom skills,” Ehst said. “The addition of a master’s-level credential highlights our commitment to certifying teachers whose practice is strengthened by scholarship.”

The need for such a program is underscored by the ongoing teacher shortage crisis, as reported by sources such as The Washington Post. Goshen College recognizes the urgency of addressing this issue and is committed to providing comprehensive solutions through innovative educational programs, such as the M.A.T.

The M.A.T. program will offer the following three pathways for students in the Transition to Teaching program to continue to a full Master of Arts degree:

  1. Master of Arts in Teaching: This pathway will provide students with a comprehensive curriculum that includes general coursework in either elementary or secondary education and specialized training in teaching English Language Learners (ELL). Graduates will be eligible for Indiana state teaching licensure in both areas.
  2. Graduate Certificate in Transition to Teaching: Designed for individuals with a bachelor’s degree who are seeking initial licensure, this pathway offers a streamlined curriculum focusing on essential teaching skills and pedagogical knowledge. Upon completion and passing all Praxis exams, students will receive their Indiana state teaching license.
  3. Graduate Certificate in Teaching English Language Learners (EL): Tailored to licensed educators seeking to enhance their skills in teaching EL students, this pathway provides specialized coursework in language acquisition theories, differentiated instruction, and cultural competency. Graduates will be eligible to add an EL endorsement to their existing Indiana teaching license.

The curriculum of the program is designed to meet the standards of initial licensure while providing advanced scholarly training. It emphasizes experiential learning, critical analysis of educational research and collaboration with diverse student populations. Admission requirements will be identical to GC’s current undergraduate Transition to Teaching program.
