Art majors present their work in senior art exhibits

Twelve Goshen College senior art majors will showcase their work in the Music Center’s Hershberger Art Gallery between March 8 and April 26.

The Senior Art Show I, open March 8–24, will display the art of Aaron Bontrager, Alma Miller, Alia Munley, Ida Short, Benjamin Thapa and Kate Yoder. An exhibit reception including refreshments will be held Sunday, March 8 from 2 to 4 p.m.

The Senior Art Show II, open March 29 through April 14, will display the art of Tasha Friesen, Seth Krabill, Shina Park, Lee Powers, Mandy Schlabach and Jama Yoder. An exhibit reception including refreshments will be held Sunday, March 29 from 2 to 4 p.m.

A combined exhibition will be open April 19-26, including a reception on Saturday, April 25, 2 to 3:30 p.m.

All events are free and open to the public.


Senior Exhibition I

Aaron Bontrager

Aaron Bontrager, from Archbold, Ohio, will show graphic design work, including advertisements influenced by nature, humor and illusion.

 

 


Alma Miller

Alma Miller, from Akron, Pennsylvania, will show a series of abstract acrylic paintings that convey the range of emotional turmoil associated with sexual violence.

 

 


AliaMunley

Alia Munley, from Mundelein, Illinois, will show her mixed media watercolors and photographs that celebrate the wonderful, unique and amazingly talented women of Goshen.

 

 


Ida Short

Ida Short, from Kalona, Iowa, will show her various intaglio-type prints around themes of miscommunication or non-communication. These works were inspired through her Study-Service Term experience in Tanzania as well as her experience with playing piano for 14 years.

 


BenjiThapa

Benjamin Thapa, from Kathmandu, Nepal, will share his cultural experiences in Nepal through his graphic design pieces.

 

 


Kate Yoder

Kate Yoder, from Elkhart, Indiana, will show her mixed media collages that explore the shifting nature of memories and the relationship between humans, culture and nature.

 

 


Senior Exhibition II

Tasha Friesen

Tasha Friesen, from Goshen, will show her graphic design work, which attempts to bring design off the wall and into the more traditionally artistic space of the studio.

 

 


Seth Krabill

Seth Krabill, from Goshen, will show combinations of functional ceramic sets, emphasizing vessels that we use daily and are often underappreciated.

 

 


Shina Park

Shina Park, from Vancouver, Canada, will show a series of posters utilizing both illustration and graphic design dedicated to “comfort women,” women of Asia and the Pacific coerced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II.

 

 


Lee Powers

Lee Powers, from Fort Wayne, Indiana, will show a body of work consisting of different wallpaper and fabric designs, including some elements from her recent travels in China.

 

 


MandySchlabach

Mandy Schlabach, from Tucson, Arizona, will show a series of watercolor and charcoal portraits of people who inspire her.

 

 


Jama Yoder

Jama Yoder, from Goshen, will show her graphic design work focused on intertwining her personal artistic flare with client-based graphic design. Her work combines fine art techniques, such as watercolor, with graphic elements such as typography.

 


The Hershberger Art Gallery is located in the Music Center and is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The building is accessible to people using wheelchairs and others with physical limitations.
